EXERCISE, in business or law, to make use of a right available in a legally binding agreement, e.g. to implement the right of the holder of an option to buy (in the case of a call) or sell (in the case of a put) the underlying security.

BASIS, INVESTMENT, is the cost or book value of an investment. The gain or loss on an investment is the sale price less the basis. Basis is often called "cost basis."

INTERIM STATEMENT is a financial report covering only a portion of a fiscal year (prepared by accountants, but usually unaudited). Quarterly statements from publicly traded companies are one example of an interim statement. Interim statements are not as detailed or as exact as annual statements.
